Andrew Johnson was born in Raleigh, North Carolina, on December 29, 1808, to Jacob Johnson (1778–1812) and Mary (“Polly”) McDonough (1783–1856), a laundress.  He had two older siblings who died in childhood.  William was 4 years older than Andrew and Elizabeth.  He was born in a two room shack in Raleigh.   [31]

Both his father and mother were illiterate and both worked at times as tavern servants.  His father, Jacob would die in Andrew’s youth.  His mother Polly, a washerwoman, would remarry another very poor man named Turner Doughtry. [32]

Johnson helped organize a mechanics’ (working men’s) ticket in the 1829 Greeneville municipal election. He was elected town alderman, along with his friends Blackston McDannel and Mordecai Lincoln.[70]  f
